A CNN story popularizes what some friends of mine and I have known for weeks (we've already got ours: cases of ours): Trader Joe's "Charles Shaw" wines are a fantastic bargain at $1.99/bottle. After trying a bottle of everything - disliking only the Cabernet - I picked up a few cases of their Merlot, which is a great table wine.
Posted by Russell Whitaker at January 22, 2003 07:10 PM | TrackBackExcellent! James, thanks for the expert feedback. I just went and checked my own stock, and see that all my Merlots are 2001. Sheer good luck on my part, none of it (yet) attributable to expertise. That's why I have friends like you: to educate me in these matters.
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on January 23, 2003 11:56 PMChristine: according to the Trader Joe's website: "Unfortunately, we don't offer a mail order service."
Looks like you'll need to have a friend in California or Nevada shop for you, then mail you your case(s) of wine.

Thank you. I've been so annoyed by people who can't - or won't - read my original article, its follow-ups, or the Trader Joe's website that I've been ignoring the "where can I get this in X" questions.

It beats your $20 bottles by a long shot! I have one bottle left. I have a friend working in CA and she is keeping an eye out for me some too. She said that they never have it in shock, its always flying off the shelves. Believe the hype! This stuff is GREAT!

Posted by: Lisa on February 4, 2004 06:32 PMWhy is Trader Joes the only one selling such a popular wine, can someone answer that? This is ridiculous!
Posted by: Tracey on February 6, 2004 11:31 AMTracey, that's an easy one to answer: Trader Joe's makes Charles Shaw wines! They own the label... so of course you wouldn't find it elsewhere. Follow the CNN link in the original article for the full story.
To the rest of you: stop asking where you can find this wine, and check out Trader Joe's website.
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on February 6, 2004 04:19 PMDo any of you know were to purchase in NYC. Thanks I look forward to drinking it.
Posted by: james on February 26, 2004 12:43 PMLike everyone else, I'm interested in buying 2 Buck Chuck but because I live in New York, the Trader Joes in my area is not allowed to sell this product by law. You can't get it ordered through the mail so I can't get it unless I travel to another state or visit every mom and pop liquor store in the area and ask if they carry it. If anyone is able to find out where you can find this wine (especially if you live in Long Island), let me know. I had it recently when I visited a friend in Boston and it was really good.

It's a shame some of the responses have to be so rude - I did a search for "Charles Shaw" wine and the page that came up didn't have any of the old posts that are being referenced. Also, the wine is made by Bronco Winery and they have a license agreement with Trader Joe's with plans to sell their wines in other outlets soon - possibly in some of the other states where there are no Trader Joe's stores. Good Luck!
Posted by: Carla on June 4, 2004 08:16 PMPlease tell me where I can purchase "Two Buck Chuck"in the New Jersey area. Thanks.
Posted by: Joyce Mazurek on June 17, 2004 06:27 AMtwo buck chuck is basically cheap blended swill from the lowest quality grapes from the california central valley -- if you want some buy a box of franzia box wine made from the same grapes and the same company -- bronco wine group -- the benefit with the boxed stuff is that you won't have to go out and buy a cork screw and you will not embarrass yourself by telling your friends you found this great new wine
Posted by: g money on July 22, 2004 10:23 PMThere are six Trader Joe's locations in Maryland and none of them sell the 2 Buck Chuck. Therefore, I think the question should be which Trader Joe's locations carry the stuff.

NO!!!!
As a TJ employee, lemme say that it's ours, and won't be anyone elses anytime soon. And it is the same as that 5 buck a box box wine. Why are you people soooo into this stuff? It's alright, I guess (i'm a little biased after lugging thousands of cases of it for the past 2 years) but no need to freak out. And to whomever runs this board/blog....i feel so sorry for you. 90% of the above posts are just wastes of bandwidth. Try dealing with those same people everyday yammering on and on about how good this "two buck james mer-lot" is....
---off soapbox now
:)
* giggles *
Oooooooh a HUGE part of me wants to ask where I can get the wine (it's seems to be the IN thing to do!) - but I CAN read and this has to be the FUNNIEST thread ever. (OK, where's the sign, somebody needs a sign..) You hsould SO send it to Charles Shaw, he would LOVE it!
Now, I'm off to http://www.traderjoes.com/locations/index.asp...I too want to try this cheap wine that's supposedly SO fine...May you all be happily sloshed this holiday season...
Charles Shaw wines are sold exclusively at Trader Joe's stores. The wine is available at over 150 Trader Joe's stores across the country, but not available in all locations due to state and local laws regulating the sale of wine. Here's a list of Trader Joe's locations where the elusive elixir, sold in 750 ml bottles, can be purchased:
Arizona (all stores)
California (all stores)
Illinois (all stores)
Indiana (all stores)
Massachusetts (Brookline, Cambridge and Framingham locations only)
Michigan (all stores) Nevada (all stores)
New Jersey (Westfield location only)
Ohio (all stores)
Oregon (all stores)
Virginia (all stores)
Washington State (all stores)
The price of Charles Shaw varies from $1.99 to $3.39, depending on location. We'd love to offer Charles Shaw to our customers for $1.99 in all stores, but the transportation costs, taxes and various state distribution laws add substantial costs. And if you're a regular at Trader Joe’s, you know that we change our retails only when our costs change. We always try to have honest, low everyday prices. Other companies may have just line-priced the wine for $2.99 everywhere for simplicity. We prefer the complexity, especially when it gives our customers the lowest price possible. We think even at $3.39 in Ohio, it's still an excellent deal.
Posted by: Claudia on December 11, 2004 11:06 AMThe Johnny Yahoo that posted in July is completely wrong. The Owner/producer of Two Buck Chuck is Bronco Winery. Contrary to what Yahoo Johnny says-Bronco is not afffilited with Franzia the wine box producey; hasn;t been for 30 years.

Posted by: It's a fact on December 24, 2004 10:58 PMit is good wine for $2 for a 750 ml bottle - $3 in illinois - but, there ends up being no savings if you purchase a 1500 ml bottle of $5 or $6 sutter home or vengance at your local grocery store. and, the hangover feels like a $2 battle of wine!
Posted by: Tom on January 28, 2005 12:14 PMYes Charles Moore Shaw is my real name. First off......I live close to the Sea of Tranquility,.. you know on the moon? How in the hell can I get it here?
This is how crazy this sounds when someone gives you a website that tells specifically which states are able to distribute the wine. It took all but 1 minute to discover that I couldn't get it in Austin Texas by means of any store, but thank God I have a friend in Bellingham Washington that can ship it to me..... Bottom line, just read the damn posts and ask questions afterwards. By the way my friends do call me "Two-Buck Chuck" and I was amazed to see my name on a bottle of wine. I did get to try a bottle that someone had sent to me on my B-Day. Thanks Wendy!
Keep Trying,
Chuck Shaw
you are paying for the glass and cork that surround the wine. I would pay more for bottled water. save yourself some money and buy the box stuff. different producer, yes, but from the same big lot of bulk grapes.

Posted by: abc on May 8, 2005 03:08 PMHad my first taste of Two Buck Chuck last weekend while visiting California on the manditory Trader Joe's shopping spree. The Shiraz was quite tasty. After a weekend of wine tasting through the snippy Napa Valley and lower key Paso Robles area, was very pleasantly surprised. Cheers!
Posted by: Kron on May 20, 2005 02:33 AMCna we mail order through UPS or FEDEX by the case?
Posted by: Wm. Ardies on July 21, 2005 06:41 PMOK, you all have a subjective opinion of the quality of 2-buck Chuck wines. You all looked at the price tag *and then* tasted the wine. But, does anybody have objective evidence like a blind taste test with friends? or a blind test by "wine experts"? Without that I'm not convinced one way or the other.
Consumer's Reports a while back did a blind taste test of many beers. Low-priced Old Milwaukee won. I'm convinced.
Posted by: Rita on August 3, 2005 12:49 PM
Have to agree with Kron. If anyone plans on purchasing large quantities of this swill ... I have drank my share of "good" wines, and the TBC Shiraz is really the only one worth drinking.

Posted by: TILDEN on March 4, 2006 07:05 AMThere are a lot of inexpensive wines available. Two-buck rivals any jug wine at a better price with a great label. If you don't like, give it away. At $2-3, who cares. Find a friend visiting a city with a Trader Joe's and have them bring back a case. I can't believe anyone would drink out of a box!
Posted by: greg on March 7, 2006 02:01 PMNow I'm really perplexed, I live in San Francisco and Charles Shaw is my neighbor.
He doesn't know why his name is on the label but it's made him really popular! He says he can't complain as even the Mondavi sons have asked for his autograph. What's Charles Shaw to do???
Drink up!
