Rock SOPMOD M-14 Commando Carbine: opinions solicited

Thanks to my friend Michael for passing this along to me: the Rock SOPMOD M-14 conversion ("Commando Carbine"). I'd love to try one of these 9-pound carbine modifications. It's apparently a smaller overall package than even a typical M-4.

Notice also the IER (intermediate eye relief) mounted Aimpoint, placed Scout-style. Anyone have experience with this? I'd love to see your comments.

I agree with both of you (Steve and James); thanks for your impressions.

Nowadays, I'm personally tending toward Steve's aforementioned "Congo FAL". It's perfectly adequate, and a DSA/Imbel parts kit version can be built for a few hundred bucks.

Hey James: care to discuss the new "3rd gen" Aimpoints?

I couldn't imagine lobbing off my perfectly good lugs. I paid extra for those. Build something that would accomidate.

I would definatly like to get one issued to me. I am currently in Iraq, and think it would be nice to have a smaller weapon than my m16a2 that I can use in the urban CQB enviroment and that packs a similar punch to that of the AK47s that the Iraqis/ insurgent forces are using against us.

Stanley:
on the issue of cost, I did some searching around and spoke to a rep from Troy Industries (the manufacturer) though Email. The cost of the modification of an M14/M1A that you already own is $2500.00 US. The silencer is $950.00 US. IF you do not already have an M14/M1A to be modified they have pre-ban M14s that you can purchase for midification for $2000.00 US. I plan on using some of the money saved from this deployment on aquiring one.

Hell yeah man, that thing is beautiful. I own an M14, so seeing a configuration for it as an assault rifle just awesome. I just retired from the Marines in july after 29 years of service, so this looks like something that I could buy with my retirement money that both my son and I would enjoy taking to the shooting range.
