[This is new contributor Mariko Kage's first blog post. Welcome! - Ed.]
I just went to watch "The Hunted", which opened Friday night. I highly recommend it.
The Fandango movie synopsis says: "The Hunted is a suspense-thriller about a deep woods tracker (Tommy Lee Jones) who teams up with a female FBI agent (Connie Nielsen) to hunt down a trained assassin (Benicio Del Toro). The killer remains one step ahead, and escapes into the city."
Tommy Lee Jones plays L.T. Bonham, a Tom Brown-like character and Benicio Del Toro is Aaron Hallam, a former soldier tormented by his experiences in Kosovo where he was an eyewitness to genocide. L.T., a tracker in British Columbia, once trained soldiers like Aaron for secret ops in the U.S. military. He explains to the FBI agent played by Nielsen, who is investigating the murder of hunters: "I trained him to survive, I trained him to kill." The movie is partially based on the life of Tom Brown, who has trained, among others, Richard Marcinko and SEAL Team Six.
One of the tracking scenes take place in Oregon's Cascade mountains, where Aaron hunts deer hunters, armed with only a knife. By the way, he uses a TOPS knife custom-designed by Tom Brown and prominently featured in the movie several times (see cover story in April issue of Blade magazine). I have been told that all the knife throwing in the movie was done by Tom Brown himself (with whom I recently trained).
Those who have trained at his Tracker School would appreciate the shots of Benicio using the hand drill, creating a tinder bundle, forging a knife, camouflaging in wilderness and in urban environments, and the attention paid to the art of tracking in general as well as several scenes of knife fighting. I read a terrible review by the L.A. Times this morning... they just don't get it. I say it's definitely a movie worth seeing again and learning from.
Posted by Mariko Kage at March 17, 2003 09:27 PM | TrackBackHi! my name is Rodrigo and I am from Bolivia. I think this is a great movie! The photograph, the plot, the colors, the filters used, the wilderness, everything is great! I'm a social comunicator, which means I study films, and this one of my favorites Tommy Lee´s and Benicio´s movies. The movie have some mistakes whit the continuity and the edition, but this problems doesn´t affect the main essence of the film. I think the history is very spiritual, is like the man versus him in the woods, his feral side, his true side. I love everything related with the nature, the natural life.
Okay that´s all.

In the killing scene where he kills the deer hunters in oregon he throws the knife underhand and it goes straight like a bullet? Is that even possible? I started knife throwing and tried to throw under hand and make it go straight like his but it never works. Then on the training scene he throws a knife that spins twice then just goes straight like a dart. Is that even possible? ive done lots of reasearch to see if you can throw a knife like that.
If any body finds info or knows how to throw like that please email me
thanks
Colby,
You asked, "In the killing scene where he kills the deer hunters in oregon he throws the knife underhand and it goes straight like a bullet? Is that even possible?"
I've been throwing knives (as a hobby) for some time now and I can say with all confidence that it is IMPOSSIBLE to throw a knife "under-handed" like a bullet at such a long distance. However, this can be done at a much closer range. Traditionally, I throw knives by throwing my arm in a wide ark, about level with my shoulder, while twisting my waist for more force, before snapping my wrist, and letting the force slide the knife out of my hand. I think the longest I've thrown a knife "Straight" like a bullet is about six or seven feet. After that, the knife or throwing spike looses forward thrust and starts to turn side ways. But up to that point, the objects (depending on their weight) have great penetrating power.
Then you asked, "Then on the training scene he throws a knife that spins twice then just goes straight like a dart. Is that even possible?"
It is possible to throw a knife from long distances, but the knife has to be weighted correctly. The blade generally has to weigh more in comparison to the handle. You can't just pick up a steak knife and throw it. If you did, chances are the handle would hit first. Plus, when throwing different knives, you must learn to adapt to the weight of each knife. For example, it wouldn't take much force to throw a heavy blade a long distance, but a much much lighter blade takes more strength.
I was in the military for over three years and I even had a chance to throw knives with some special forces soldiers. Although I had never received training in knife throwing, the SF guys were amazed that a "Non-special Ops" guy could throw just as good or better than they could. It's just a matter of practice.
I can throw just about anything sharp: Knives, forks, spikes, nails, razor blades, screw drivers, even large sharp splentors of wood. Everyone has their own throwing style. I'm still just an amature but it has taken me years of test throwing to find the styles and techniques that work for me. I'm sure you will find the one that works for you.

Posted by: KnightMan on June 10, 2005 07:10 PMThis film is a tribute to the ideology of being with nature. I hope to go to Tom Brown school one day. I particularly like the oregon falls, wilderness and knife making scenes. Also Hallam explaining tracking to his (is it?)sorta adopted daughter. Lee Jones explains that he wears a non tread shoe , size 10 kinda like a slipper - Does anyone know of these and also I was wondering what type of jacket Del Toro wears when stalking those deer hunters. Is it a Spiewak jacket? This film, action aside (though a fast paced thrill) is a great trackers ideation. It educates and entertains. A++++ Please email with info about those 'slippers' and Tom Browns Tops knife, where I can get them.
Regards
Col
that slipper was like a tobey shoe the ninja use to wear them. see i take ninjitsu and that is what we wear. and you can throw a knife under handed and it stab like a dart. if you buy a bushman survival knife made by cold steel. you can throw it just under hand.
Posted by: austin on March 21, 2006 04:43 PMi have the Tom Brown tracker knife made by TOPS. It is by far the best survival knife on the market today.
It comes with a Kydex (sp.?) sheath that is worn on the lower back. This is a great place to keep a knife while camping in the woods, but check out the look on the faces of fellow campers if you run into them. I think everyone has seen 'the Hunted' by now and it's hard to wear the knife without getting a comment or two, so I just keep it in a napsack, unless i'm sure I wont run into anybody.
As per throwing it, its a great knife to practive with because of its weight. It is super heavy and super durable.
The fact is, its so heavy that even if it doesn't hit its target balde first, it will still cause massice dammage.
Throwing the Tom Brown Tracker is like throwing a softball with serrated stitching.
You can practice throwing it, and in time you can accuratly hit targets blade first 'if this is your intention'. I have managed to figure out the number of times it must spin depending on your distance from the target.
As per how it is thrown in the movie, it is just a movie...
I have been throwing knives off and on since I was a kid.I got back into it when I saw the film "The Hunted",and have been throwing nearly every single day since it came out.Not bragging, but I have gotten very good at it.
(My record is over 100 "Sticks" in-a-row from about 12 feet away.I only stopped because my arm got tired, not because I failed to stick one.lol)
I can say with absolute certainty that you *cannot throw a knife like a dart (Unless your very close to the target-a couple of feet at best). That scene in where "Aaron" throws the knife underhanded like a dart was done with a string (or wire),BUT,the scene where he throws it in training with LT and it spins before it hits the tree was actually Tom Brown throwing it himself, and he did it on the first take (No string, wires,or any "Tricks").
I have learned that for a "half spin",you usually haft to stand between 6-8 feet away (Depending on the size of the knife, and the length of your arms),and for a "full spin" it is usually at 10-12 feet (again depending on length factors).
Here is a link to verify what I am saying about knife throwing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knife_throwing
And if you look up interviews about Tom Brown,Del Toro, and Tommy Lee about the film, you can easily verify my other point.(That Tom Brown threw the knife (with spins) into that tree with just one take)...
*NOTE: There is a knife specifically made for throwing "Like a dart",even has a world record for distance throwing,BUT,that is not the kind of knife (or knives) we're talking about here...

im interested in the shuriken (throwing star) used in the movie the hunted does anyone know where i can either buy one or a reproduction if so please e-mail me at hankman67@yahoo.com
Posted by: robert on September 30, 2006 08:35 PMcloser to the beginning, LT [lee jones] explains to two agents at the deer hunter scene that aaron [del toro] was wearing a size 10 shoe with no tread, similar to a slipper. i am VERY interested in knowing where footwear such as this can be purchased, and i am not looking for tabi boots [the all black high top slipper boots with a split between the big toe and the index toe- worn by ninjas and trainers of ninjitsu.] i am looking for a slipper like shoe that is solid with no split at the toes...like what they were wearing in the movie. if anybody knows where such footwear can be found, post something on this site to let me know.
Posted by: matt on December 24, 2006 05:01 PMDave Beck made knife in the movie not Tom Brown.
Posted by: aaron on December 31, 2006 02:57 PMI use something called a no-spin throwing and i can throw a throwing spike from 16 feet with no spin(like a dart)oh and as to the question about
the(no tread shoes)look into kung-fu shoes they have no tread
i just want to know how to twirl the tracker knife like del toro did just before he threw the knife in the 2 hunters scene.also i am sure whoever is proficient in tracker throwing can throw the knife underhanded!
Posted by: will on January 14, 2007 10:46 AMMatt, the kind of shoes Tommy Lee and Benicio wear are just a type of moccasins. The company who makes them is Catskill Mountain Moccasins(http://www.catskill-moc.com/), but there are some other brands who make similar mocs such as Sodhoppers Custom Footwear(http://www.sodhoppers.com/) and Walking Liberty Moccasins(http://www.walkinglibertymocs.com/). I have been really debating whether to buy some, my favorite is the Sodhoppers Stealth Trackers. However, i have come to the conclusion that making my own would be best. Here's what one guy did:http://www.naturetalk.net/viewtopic.php?t=53.

Really? I thought it was rubbish. Too thick and heavy, too many pointless 'features', poor grind angles, I'd rather a simple single bladed full tang knife with a flat scandi grind any day of the week.
"Dave Beck made knife in the movie not Tom Brown. "
Tom Brown designed it, Dave Beck made it
Posted by: geoff on February 20, 2007 08:53 AMThe Tom Brown Tracker is not a knife I would advise using. Multipurpose? Yes. Makes you feel like you're in the movies? Yes. Strikes fear into the hearts of families on vacation? Absolutely. However, this thing is far too heavy to be useful for any detail work you might need to do in a survival situation. (i.e. minor surgery on an injured member of your party, making some of the more delicate trap setups, etc.) Also, it is too short to be very effective for chopping. It's good at doing everything fairly well but does nothing extremely well. Take a decent full-tang sheath knife and a tomahawk. You can easily make a new handle for either and if you lose your knife, you still have a cutting tool.
Posted by: John on March 3, 2007 12:54 AMThe mocs made by catskill I'm sure are very good quality, but they are ridiculously priced. Especially for some shoes that you are going to be abusing by walking through the wilderness. Rocks, streams, sticks, briars, cacti, cold, heat. All these things are hard on shoes. My suggestion is to find out how to make your own moccassins. In Participating in Nature-Field Guide to Primitive Living Skills book, Thomas J. Elpel describes how to make moccassins from buckskin, as well as sandals from old tires. He is very detailed, and precise. You can get deer and cow hides from meat processors. You can usually get them for free, since they are going to just discard the hides anyway. It's a lot more cost effective, and you'll learn a several skills in the process. There are also many other guides to making moccassins in the library, bookstore, and online. Just have to look for em.
A knife can be thrown either over hand "like a bullet", such as the scene in the sewer when hallam hits the detective in the neck, or under hand, such as the scene with the hunters, with the right amount of forward momentum and a grip just behind the knife's balance point. It takes a lot of frustrating practice, and of course will not fly straight forever, but does work. As far as the spin he does just before throwing, check out the Sigatelis Knife trick video on you tube, it the only good one i can find that is a fixed blade and not butterfly.
