Posted by: Curt Howland on October 13, 2003 07:42 PMCurt, "caustic" means "alkaline", which phenol proper is not. Phenol is based on a benzene ring, with a hydoxide ion as a substituent. In water, it's a proton donor, which makes it an acid. When you use the term "phenol", you'll more likely referring to any one of a large class of molecules which contain at least one phenol group.
