"Troopers arrest man with multiple weapons in car" in Ohio

On the smith2004-discuss list, list member Matthew Gaylor from Ohio reports that a well-known libertarian, Jeffrey Jordan (aka "The Hunter"), was arrested after having been stopped, it is claimed, for speeding in Ohio. A local paper records the incident yesterday as "Troopers arrest man with multiple weapons in car." Gaylor reports in a post to the list:

Yesterday I was contacted by Don Lobo and was asked if I could assist Liberty Round Table's Hunter [Jeffrey Jordan], who had been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon by The Ohio State Highway Patrol. Hunter had been en route to share the holidays with friends and family and was simply transversing the Buckeye State when he was stopped for speeding near Ashland, OH (80 miles north of Columbus).

Without revealing too many of the particulars, at some point during the traffic stop the patrol yanked him out of his truck and searched him, found two pistols on his person, several knives, a FAL with a thousand rounds locked in the back and several swords. Ohio doesn't have a CCW permit system and such offenses are felonies. He was arrested on Monday and was able to bail out yesterday (New Year's Eve). However the patrol has obtained a search warrant for his vehicle and will not release it until perhaps Monday at the earliest.

I left my bunker compound in Columbus, grabbed a friend and found Hunter in Ashland. I met with his attorney who attempted to allow Hunter to gain access to his personal effects from his impounded vehicle. The head of the Ashland Post of the Highway Patrol would not let him retrieve anything from his vehicle. This included a change of underwear, Christmas gifts for his mother and family, clean socks, his PGP encrypted laptop and even his toothbrush. This was quite unreasonable after spending two days in jail, having no vehicle, no clean clothes, and on New Year's Eve to boot.

His lawyer thought this unreasonable move was due to the unsolved sniper cases in Columbus, his lawyer is trying to find out what the warrant is for etc. Speculation is that they want to test the guns ballistically.

I took Hunter out to dinner for a steak and then to Walmart for some fresh underwear and T-shirts.

Hunter is in good spirits and vows to fight this.

He will be incommunicado for a few days.

He had a hotel room and Don Lobo was scheduled to arrive in the early AM this morning to pick him up.

A short while after seeing this post to the Smith list, at 1502 Pacific time yesterday, I happened to have the Fox News Channel playing in the background, and I heard presenter Dari Alexander excitedly report on this incident, with her voiceover punctuated by video footage of items seized from Jordan's car, lingering over the FAL. I looked for a repeat of the news item on subsequent half and half-hour news update slots, but it seems to have not been repeated; I'd wanted to record it on my PVR.

Another newspaper reports that "Trooper Finds Weapons Stash In SUV", commenting, "Also found was a homemade device, possibly some kind of detonator"... which I wouldn't be surprised to find out was the actuator for his car alarm (what would you like to bet that the discovery it was an innocuous device won't result in a news followup to that effect?). CNN's website doesn't have a story related to Jordan, though an Ohio-highway-shooter related story was featured the same day. By the way, I agree with a number of posters on several lists where this issue is being discussed: the Ohio police can't be considering him a suspect in any of the Ohio shootings: they released him on bail!

It's worth noting that he was transiting the state en route to another state. It's not proven he was even speeding; it's a well-known observation that Ohio highway cops routinely use "speeding" as a pretext for stopping people of interest. As for the supposed probable cause the arresting officer claims - having seen magazine pouches on Jordan's belt - well, my only problem with that scenario is that Jordan should have been more discreet, especially when travelling through fascist gun-hating jurisdictions. If I were travelling through a state where human vermin where shooting people on the highways, you bet I'd be armed and ready... to be otherwise would be irresponsible. Jordan was taking responsibility for his own safety, and minding his own business. Yes, I wasn't there, but everything I've read about the guy and by the guy tells me he seems a responsible person.

This guy needs a defense fund set up (remember the case of Ronald Dixon?)... anyone interested?
