Cargo Cult Finance, or "Financial Pornography"

Christopher Pellerito has written an excellent piece on the phenomenon of "financial pornography", a term coined by mathematician John Allen Paulos to describe "under-researched puff pieces on personal finance (e.g. Five Hot Stocks to Pump Up your 401k NOW!)"

The Paulos book is a pretty good read; for a guy who is a pure mathematician, he is able to write about politics and about economics in a reasonably lucid style.

I should warn your readers though -- Paulos is, as I understand it, a close personal friend of blogosphere bete noire Paul "Krugboy" Krugman.

Hmm. I'm curious as to whether or not "the motley fool" is fin-porn or not. I suspect so, but would like to hear other opinions...
