Quote of the Day

One of the first duties of the physician is to educate the masses not to take medicine.

Ummm, why? Isn't it a good thing for people to take responsibility for their health? (Please note that I am not advocating that people automatically inject massive quantities of opiods for minor pains or something equally silly.)
Is this quote an attempt to endow physicians with omniscience, or something like, "Don't bother me kid, I'm trying to WORK here."

Terry,

Osler was simply commenting on the the universal tendancy of people to unthinkingly demand the dispensal of medicines, as if the act itself were ritual magic with curative power.
