L. Neil Smith, on a mailing list this morning, mentioned he'll be watching "Van Helsing" soon at the cinema. I'm not yet seen it, and was surprised to have heard about it when the trailers hit the cinemas and TV: I was familiar with the Japanese animation series "Hellsing" (note the spelling), in which the daughter of Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (correctly giving homage to Stoker), and present head of the "Hellsing Foundation", creates an uneasy vampire hunting alliance with the semi-psychotic vampire Alucard (note the spelling, but backwards), for whom Hugh Jackman, in the movie "Van Helsing" is the (slightly effeminate) spitting image, but as the amnesiac "Gabriel Van Helsing".
All very confusing.
I'm not sure whether this is a licenced, retooled-for-American-audiences live action adaption of the Japanese original, or yet another blatant slightly altered ripoff a la "The Lion King", Disney's theft of "Kimba the White Lion" ("Jangaru taitei", or "Jungle Emperor".)
All this having been said, I'm certainly open to enjoying "Van Helsing", if it's good... regardless of provenance or inspiration.
Posted by Russell Whitaker at May 17, 2004 10:37 AM | TrackBackI have not watched it, but my sister informed me that even the beauty of Kate Beckinsale was not enough to make the movie enjoyable. Something about a terrible plot, overly contrived. I suppose if you do not take the movie seriously at all, it might be entertaining.
The anime series Hellsing, on the other hand, is great fun.

If you absolutely must, perhaps I would say it *might* be okay as a Netflix rental. But I would hesitate to recommend that you spend theatre dollars on it.
Being a fan of both Jackman and Beckinsale I went optimistically, but was ultimately disappointed.
After I saw it, I read the Wall Street Journal's review, and their reviewer characterized the score as being performed by "the four-aspirin orchestra." Heh. And indeed, I had walked out with a headache.
If you decide to go anyway, let me know what you think.
Cheers.

I'm also waiting, rather than seeing it in a theater, but mostly because Athena is still too young to sit still that long.
Right on about Disney ripping people off. If they didn't have their own senator, they'd be a criminal organization.

Posted by: Curt Howland on May 18, 2004 9:23 AMI too, usually wait until a movie is out on disk before I go see it, as theater prices are outrageous.
But, if you like, I'll go see it with you. When and where?
Maybe we can try that izakaya place you've mentioned afterward?
i don't get it is gabriel van helsing the son of abraham van helsing or another person trained by monks and given the last name van helsing.and where does the daughter of van helsing comes into place.
Posted by: chris on June 19, 2004 1:12 PMAs far as I can tell after seeing the movie, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the animated series 'Hellsing'
And in the movie his name is not Gabriel van Helsing. His first name is never stated, he is just known as 'van Helsing' by everyone, as though he has no first name.
*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*
It is only Dracula who calls him Gabriel. He is actually surprised when he is first called that. Dracula calls him Gabriel because he (van Helsing) is the left hand of God (Archangel Gabriel) or at least he was before he lost his memory and showed up at the vatican half dead, ever since going through life as van Helsing
ps: kate beckinsale has one fine looking booty
Posted by: Jeroen on June 21, 2004 6:07 AMIf you watch Van Helsing :: The London Assignment, the animated prequel to the Universal movie, Van Helsing introduces himself as Gabriel Van Helsing to one of the characters, though. So it is stated, afterall.
Posted by: Shelgeyr on July 27, 2004 6:41 PMin addition to the simularities to hellsing, the movie seems to be alot like the vampire hunter D story as well. and they clearly stole the character design.

Posted by: dalia on December 2, 2004 3:55 PMThinking of Disney rip offs, you have to remember Winnie the Pooh, originally A.A Milne, illustrated by Sheppard something and also the Nightmare before Christmass by Tim Burton (Not an actual rip off, but afterwards Disney bought that from Tim Burton).
Could actually be a good thing, since I figured Tim Burton had some money issues regarding the Nightmare...
I need to Know if anyone has cheats for vanhelsing on the PS2 in the next 5 days today is 3/24/05
Posted by: Cool kid on March 24, 2005 7:49 PMMy name is Gabriel does that mean im vanhellsing
Posted by: cool kid on March 24, 2005 7:52 PMThe movie was based on the book 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker. One of the characters is 'Abraham Van Helsing' who is a vampire hunter. This is who Gabriel Van Helsing is based on. By the way, he said his last memory was of him fighting the Romans at a battle in AD76 or 72. The Hellsing series is probably also based on the book 'Dracula', but Van Helsing is not based on Hellsing.
Posted by: The Jerusalem Man on April 6, 2005 2:04 AMI don't really care what anyone says about Van Helsing but Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale make a great team and a cute couple!!!
They rule!!!
I hope there is another Van Helsing movie, VH2 would definetly be interesting and while they are at it, they should bring in more interesting monsters and so forth.
Starting with that sinister creature from the Black lagoon, that green fish dude?
Or make new monsters? Would be interesting to know what happens to Gabriel when Drac is dead.
And his sidekick, what a rat but a cool rat.
van helsing is so cool. i just love van helsing and dracula. but the werewolf is like the god anubis. I LIKE IT
Posted by: jodie wiggins on February 15, 2006 7:59 AMNo, no, no....! I saw the making of and Stephen Sommers said he didn't want his hero called Abraham Van Hellsing, so he changed his first name.
