Brian Smith informs us that Bushmaster now markets an AR-10 semiclone that accepts FN-FAL magazines (both inch and metric). This is fairly interesting to me, since I've been mulling over picking up a carbine in .308 caliber since I encountered the Springfield Armory SOCOM 16 in a gun store a few weeks ago.

I handled this at the SHOT show last January. It does indeed take unaltered FAL mags. It appears to be of the usual Bushmaster quality, which is to say very good. It does still use the unfortunate dirty gas system of the AR series.
I'm not convinced of the utility of a 308 carbine with a bbl less than 18". You lose a lot of velocity and generate a hellish blast and flash. I don’t think it enough handier to warrant the bother.
If you really need a 16 bbl, go with a standard M4 type carbine and ditch the GI ammo in favor of something with the Nosler Ballistic Tip or the Hornaday bullet. Terminal ballistics are good enough to get the job done, though you do give up the added penetration of the 308.
If I were looking for a 308 battle rifle, here’s how I’d figure it:
For Iron sight use only, I’d go with an 18” or full length M1A.
For use primarily with optics, I’d go with the new Bushmaster.
For combination use, I’d go with the FAL in metric guise.
On the other hand, parts and configuration choice will always be better with the Bushmaster because the majority of the internals are from the 223 AR platform.
You might consider checking out a .308 VEPR-K. The only problems with this are the lack of available 20 round magazines (unless you get an M14 or Galil mag conversion and pay for the expensive magazines), and the somewhat heavy weight.
Hopefully things will go well in September and Robinson will start making some normal sized magazines for it.

Forget the Bushmaster .308. They had to eliminate the 6 o'clock locking lug on the bolt to utilize the FAL mag and its feed angle, which was designed for a tipping bolt rifle (FAL). This significantly weakening the lock-up and was, not coincidentally, a primary reason why DPMS and Armalite decided against the FAL magazine for their AR-10 design. The BM .308 has been reported to have bolt failures and BM has now discontinued the .308 rifle models.

I don't know if this is a rumor or what, but I have a Bushmaster .308 and the bolt has all the locking lugs all the way around, including the 6 oclock position, of course the extractor assembly has a locking lug at the 3 oclock position. It is an awesome weapon, little recoil for a .308 because of the gas system and the buffer in the stock. I have the carbine and it has surprisingly little blast, probably because I have a flash surpressor and not a muzzle brake. this is one of my favorite rifles.

Posted by: pkwsyckt on October 23, 2007 01:18 AMI happen to own the DPMS version of .308 16" barrel. Awsome weapon. It has some kick which is expected with a .308. DPMS wants $30-$40 per mag. I'm wondering if SR-25 mags will fit. If so, where can I get em max capacity and lowest price?
