A half year ago, I was invited to join the Orkut social networking service by my old friend Perry Metzger. A half year later, I've decided that it's an evolutionary dead end: for a service "affiliated with Google," it's unusually clunky, feature-poor, primitive, and dreadfully unreliable. I've made a few good friends through it, however, and am glad of the experience, which has been useful and informative.
Interestingly, in the last couple of weeks I've gotten email from a few people I know through Orkut, inviting me to the Multiply network, an Orkut competitor which seems vastly superior in its execution. I'd ignored those invitations, being busy with other things, but tonight I took my friend Shannon Kaplan up on her invitation, and am impressed at the sophistication of the interface. I'm not convinced I need all their features - I already have my own self-administered blog, for example - but for the general public, it seems at first approximation to be an incredibly well-integrated suite.
So, if you receive an email entitled "Russell Whitaker invites you to keep in touch on Multiply," don't automatically assume to be spam. Multiply has an interesting feature - apparently driven by Orkut user dissatisfaction - with which Orkut users can export their entire network of contacts over to Multiply in order to generate invitations to the rival service. Better I should use it now, before Orkut programs logic to block that data export.
Of course, if Orkut's programmers had been sufficiently on the ball to quickly develop such program logic, they'd also have been sufficiently agile to develop new features demanded by their users... such as forum threading up to 1990 newsreader standards, perhaps?
Posted by Russell Whitaker at August 17, 2004 09:32 PM | TrackBackHey, thanks for this great article, I tested Multiply.com too and was astonished by it's rapidity! Oh you just gave me an idea.... ;)!
Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004 03:44 PMHello "Anonymous de Fourmies, France". Glad you found this useful. So, what idea did I just give you?
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on August 27, 2004 03:51 PMWow, fast reply! I just pushed "back" and saw a message :)). My idea should be kept secret, or I would be recognized :p... Anyway I think Orkut is meant to decline (in rapidity), since there are 1'359'028 members already! @_@
Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004 03:59 PMIt's a fast reply, since I happened to see the email notification of your post in very short order, and I'm at my desk.
So, you're thinking of competing in the Friendster/Tribe/Livejournal/Orkut/Multiply space? Good luck to you, let us know when you release a beta version.
Yes, Orkut seems ready to collapse under the weight of a complete lack of capacity planning... another victim of wild, unplanned-for initial success.
Oh, and the Brazilian Invasion has hit them in a big way. The Brazilians are already homesteading Multiply in excess of any other demographic.
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on August 27, 2004 04:08 PMHahaha, nah I will not do anything: no programming, no beta version, nothing. My idea is more vicious than that (no no, no hacking! :p).
I think anyway that Orkut is like the society itself, thus making a good experience (as you said, you made good friends with it), but you were also disappointed (as in real life). Somewhat, Orkut has succeed in a reality-alike community. Technical problems may be solved after Google's jackpot on NASDAQ?...(maybe)
About the last point, it seems the friendliness Brazilian culture explains (to me) why such network is a success. Thinking about an invasion could be erronous here (on my point). This could be the subject of University study :))), hahaha, another crap :p.. I mean, they just like it, what's so bad?
Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004 04:35 PMI was joking about the Brazilian thing. My only beef with them on Orkut is that many of them - not all, but they predominate by way of sheer numbers - often post in Portuguese in communities explicitly flagged "English only."
Other than that, I love Brazilians. I'm impressed that so many of them have taken so quickly to online communities that I'm actually considering visiting San Paolo in the near future and getting to know some of them in person. I've been wanting to visit Brazil anyway.
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on August 27, 2004 04:41 PMHahaha, don't worry I am not Brazilian anyway.. also, you don't have to justify yourself (well maybe, since your name is posted // teasing you here :p).
You may experienced Brazilian friendliness soon then ;). (I've never been to Brazil or Portugal myself..but who cares anyway :p?).
My feeling now: it seems Orkut generated at least 2 disappointed persons, you and me "chatting" here :)).
Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004 04:46 PMI'm going, bye~!
Posted by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004 05:15 PMAhhhhh those brazilians on Orkut are OK the problem are the 20% of retards ,,,, haters and people that has no respect and invade good communities rather in spanish/english and keep starting posts and posts in Portuguese ,,, lack of respect .. and if you confront them ,, you're in trouble!!
Thanks!
You Americans are weird, first of all you lack in culture. You do not make the effort to even try and learn a second language, it is always America this, America that, and your Mickey Mouse Plastic Ignorant Ways of viewing life is just so wrong.
Sure, I love American countryside, and it has many good people, and it has done many good things, but unfortunately, it is made up of people, that take Inernet Socializing methods way too serious/
This is about the 20th post I ever posted in my life, and I try to keep it as low as possible, but look at you. You are using Orkut, and Hi5 and all that, to continue your friendship, and share all your privacy with the rest of the world.
You know how wrong that is ? Istead of people going out to search for real friends, romance and so forth, no, people, mostly Americans are stuck in front of their computers an average of 4 hours a day, plus another 2 hours of tv, wasting 1/3 of their lives in front of a SCREEN !!!! The other 1/3 is spent in sleeping, and the last 1/3 the Americans spend in working.
I agree, many in other places in the world are like that too, but not to the extent of Americans. Geez, instead of wasting 1/3 in front of a screen, go do something.
I also recall that Americans are afraid of death of terrorism, right ? I mean, isn't that why your own government is spying on you, using excuses such as "We do it, so you can rest assure no terrorist is doing it to you".
Look at you, you go and provide most of your details, such as location, and all kinds of traceable tracks (everytime you press submit, a guy with some cash and decent equippment can track you, and no, your government will not stop him from doing it).
Online dating systems as well as other servicesw such as Orkut, is a waste of meaningful life, just go and thing about it. Think about how much time you waste, "Oh, but technology is progress", I'd rather be the old-fashioned throw my jacket in the dirt so the lady can walk without dirtyning her shoes type, and enjoy life to its fullest, than look into a computer screen. Heck, I am doing it for 1 hour a day for emails, and that's already too much....
Don't worry abot giving one of those "You Anti-American third world country member asshole", just keep working for the Jews, and forget that I ever wrote this, before I will never come back again.
Enjoy your lives
Hey John, how's that cabin in the woods workin' out for ya? Sounds like you have a little Unibomber complex working its way to the surface there.
Posted by: Russell Whitaker on February 28, 2006 12:52 PMI tried www.yapperz.com, they are BETA and local in my state, minimal ads and they seem keep it simple like how social sites used to be... Looks pretty cool so far and fast!
I tried multiply but it was down for awhile... also tried tagworld.com.
Well, I am brazilian (taking the risk to anger/scare somebody here :(. ).
It is very sad to see this sort of "us-them" thing.
I lived in america twice in my life. As a teenager and as an adult. There is a lot of people there for whom I have family love, whom I call Mom, Dad, Sis, Uncle. I met them in 1975 and I still call them like that. We all decided that by "joining" our cultures we could learn from one another, and make ourselves better human beings.
I graduated from Berklee in 84. In those days (I donīt know today), the school was a true "culture- joiner". I met people there from places I didnīt even know existed. From tiny little pacific islands to remote middle-east regions. And americans were as much part of it as any of them. We all blended in. And the language was never a barrier because there was always patience to explain or translate in either direction.
Today there is people from everywhere, living everywhere. And everywhere there is a percentege of retards (could be more or less then 20%, maybe made out of natives, or NOT). They will never be lacking anywhere.
I think technology is great, but is making us lazy. Even to patiently explain something with a little politeness.
These are my 2 cents.
Thanks for reading.
I OWN YOUR ASS

Posted by: bob smith on January 22, 2007 12:20 PMorkut sucks, i always get this error
Bad, bad server. No donut for you.
Unfortunately, the orkut.com server has acted out in an unexpected way. Hopefully, it will return to its helpful self if you try again in a few minutes.
It's likely that the server will behave this way on occasion during the coming months. We apologize for the inconvenience and for our server's lack of consideration for others.
Posted by: sam on February 7, 2007 10:01 AMI am also getting lots of problems from orkut, I have been in orkut for the last 6 months and met lots of my old friends... but most of the time I get error of Bad Server, No Donut etc. Very difficult and frustrating.
So I tried to use this new site called Yuwie.com ... I am very satisfied with it plus it also pays for just hanging out with friends. I think I will stick along in Yuwie.com as it does sound like a great oppurtunity.
Yuwie.com | invite friends. hang out. get paid.
