Wangfujing Bookstore in Beijing

In the heart of Beijing is the huge, well-stocked Wangfujing Bookstore. If you need maps, there are thousands of them available on the first (ground) floor, just inside the main doors. English-language books can be found on the 3rd floor. Here's a pic I snapped with my Treo 650 cameraphone:

The date-stamp in the upper right corner is nice to see.

I recently purchased two $400 digital cameras, Fujitsu and Canon, neither of which had the ability to put a date-stamp in the image. The Canon made no bones about it, so after the Fujitsu turned out as per their customer service department that NO Fujitsu has that feature any more, I returned it for the more physically useful Canon.

They both rely on their packaged Windows-only software to do the date-stamping at print time if I want such a thing. There is no way to put the date stamp in the raw image except by hand with the Gimp or such. They were somewhat without words when I told them I don't use Microsoft Windows and thus their software was less than useless.

My Kodak DC260 from 1998, although dead-slow in comparison, does indeed put the date-stamp in the image. It also auto-focuses more reliably than either of the "new" models. Oh well.

I like to have the *option* of a datestamp, but would certainly be annoyed if I couldn't turn it off. The pics I took on the trip last week were predominantly from my Olympus E-1, a high-end digital SLR; those pics I did _not_ want datestamped. However, stamping on the relatively low-res cameraphone I don't mind having stamped. Same goes for the Sony CyberShot I kept as a backup in my backpack.

Indeed, I meant that the DC260 has a date-stamp in the image if I turn on that function, rather than not being able to turn it off.
