On bike locks

I just had my suspicions about the security of bicycle cable locks validated: a few minutes ago, I witnessed an acquaintance use a diamond wheel on an angle grinder to remove a Kryptonite CC4 cable on one of my bikes in about 2 seconds.

Avoid cable in all security applications.

Stick to heavy chain, or preferably solid metal. And install a ground anchor at home.

Ride cheap bikes, for a couple of reasons: 1) crooks won't steal 'em, 2) the heavier weight of the bike gives you a better workout, 3) when they die (or a stupid crook steals one), they're pretty easily replaced. I have a brother in law who wasted a bike worth 5k when a blue hair pulled a left turn in front of him. Should have been riding a cheap bike, for 5k, I can buy 50 cheap ones! Of course, if you're a professional, or just like really expensive stuff, go for the good stuff and lock it up inside and out of sight, and do your best to make the bike look like a POS (I had a friend I worked with in a bike shop in S'vale in the 70's that did that with a very expensive road bike, and he NEVER locked it up, and no one even looked twice at it... not too many crooks can spot good gear on a bike that looks bad). As for "heavy chain" or "solid metal", their is not too many things a diamond wheel on an angle grinder wont' cut through in short order...
